Achira Arrowroot, (canna edulis) sometimes known as Queensland Arrowroot  because of the large crops of this root previously grown there, is related to the ornamental cannas.

It was developed by the Inca for it's edible starchy root and has been used since as a valuable source of food. In South America, the roots are eaten raw or cooked like a potato for up to 12 hours.

The leaves are edible and used to wrap other food in parcels, similar to grape or banana leaves.

The starch is more commonly used a thickener in sauces, for gluten free cooking, and to make noodles, crackers and biscuits (Arrowroot biscuits ring a bell?).

It is said to help with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome, diarhoea, stimulate weight loss and boost the immune system.

It is high in potassium, with at least 10% protein.

Arrowroot is a beautiful subtropical plant, super easy to grow. It likes a moist, shady or dappled sunlight area, preferably a frost free zone, but it will tolerate a light frost. It can be planted in wetlands to help filter grey water.

The entire plant is also feed for stock animals, serving multiple purposes. The seeds have been used to make a purple dye and the stem has been used to make paper.

Some studies are showing that canna starch supplementation changes the intestinal microbiota and enhances the intestinal immune and barrier functions.

It will grow fairly quickly, up to 2 metres within 1-2 years, with lovely flowers, and the edible root can be harvested after the first year. Arrowroot is perfect for food forests and permaculture design, providing shelter, feed for animals and humans, and easy chop and drop mulch.

Organically grown, in a compostable or recycled pot.
