Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus) is a very potent medicinal herb - to be used under the guidance of a herbalist or naturopath. It's a beautiful little herb that likes damp, partially shady spots.
Greater celandine has typically been used internally for liver and it is very attuned to the gallbladder for disorders & gallstones.
For digestion problems often related to the liver, it has been used for indigestion, colic, detoxification, gastroenteritis, IBS and constipation.
As a lung herb, its mild sedative action can assist to relieve coughing spasms and has been used through history to treat whooping cough, bronchitis, and asthma.
It's sedative action can calm the nervous system, but too much can immobilise the muscles, so definitely a herb to use with caution.
Externally, the orange sap can be used
fresh from the plant by splitting a leaf or stem. This can be used to
treat warts, verrucae, ringworm, corns and herpes, or made into an oil or balm.
Be careful not to get the sap in your eyes. The sap contains protease (protein-dissolving) enzymes that destroy malignant viruses, so should be only used on the affected area and not used on broken skin or wounds.
Parts used: The aerial parts and roots. Harvest the aerial parts during the flowering season and the roots in the autumn.
Not recommended during pregnancy and for children under 12.
