Yellow Dock has a long history of traditional use and was mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his "Herba Britannica" (AD 23).

Since the time of Hippocrates it was used to aid digestion, poor absorption of nutrients, skin conditions, liver health, and as an overall detox and tonic herb.

Yellow dock root is your herbal ally if you’re looking for support with:

  • Detox support (MTHFR also)
  • Hormone balance
  • Energy support during menstruation
  • Digestion
  • Liver health
  • Diarrhoea & constipation
  • Blood sugar balance
  • Immune system support
  • Skin health
  • Overall mineral status

Digestive Health: Yellow Dock is classed as a bitter herb – bitters stimulate the production of saliva, digestive enzymes and bile in readiness to digest and absorb the food we consume. Yellow Dock is a prebiotic and promotes a diverse microbiome, soothes and cleanses the digestive tract without upsetting the delicate balance of gut bacteria, so is wonderful for gut health.

Yellow dock is helpful for nudging the body back toward balance in cases of both constipation and diarrhoea. Usually, people tend to use harsh, addictive laxatives to address constipation. Even naturally-occurring strong herbal laxatives can result in dependency and damage to the mucosal lining of the intestines. Because yellow dock has a smaller percentage of peristalsis stimulating ingredients, it can be used for a longer period of time with more gentle, yet still effective, benefits to digestive transit time.

Liver Health: Yellow Dock Root is particularly rich in glycosides, plant compounds that are known for their hepatoprotective effects (protecting the liver). While almost all people could benefit from detox support, those with the MTHFR mutation have genetically decreased detox efficiency. Adding detox-supportive herbs like yellow dock can assist an under-functioning liver get rid of toxins, waste products, and excess hormones.

Also high in antioxidants, Yellow Dock works to scavenge oxidative damage and stress caused by free radicals, including within liver tissue. Regular consumption of this herb will stimulate the detoxification process in liver and boost the production of bile.

Anaemia: Yellow Dock is one of the best sources of plant based (non-heme) iron - it concentrates iron from the earth and combines it with the vitamins and minerals needed to absorb this valuable mineral. This makes Yellow Dock an excellent herb for treating mild cases of anaemia caused by iron deficiency.

It also has natural chemicals known as bio-flavonoids that strengthen capillaries which in turn will boost blood circulation.

Immune Support: Yellow Dock leaves are extremely high in vitamin C – an essential vitamin for a healthy immune system. So high is the vitamin C content that it was used to treat scurvy – the disease that plagued the early European sailors.

The root is effective at boosting an ailing and stressed immune system when lymphatic inflammation and liver deficiency are present.

Skin Health: With naturally astringent properties, Yellow Dock can be applied topically to alleviate swelling, bruising, rashes, sores, fungal infections, insect bites, acne, psoriasis and eczema.

Its astringent properties also make this herb an excellent skin toner, helping to remove dirt, traces of perspiration, and make up from the surface of the skin. It also closes pores to prevent dirt and bacteria from entering. Its soothing and cooling action can provide relief from inflammation and reduce facial redness.

Hormone Balance: The bitter components in yellow dock can also be a very useful ally for naturally balancing hormones by supporting the elimination of excess estrogen during the luteal and menstrual phases of our monthly cycles. Because many skin issues originate from sluggish detox of hormones and waste products, the benefits of consuming bitters can also result in clearer skin!

Emotionally/Spiritually: As a mover of the bowels, Yellow Dock can be allied with grief workers of the plant world, helping our bodies to exhale our burdens so that we can receive new life with every fresh breath of air. Yellow Dock shows up exactly where and when it is needed. In orchestrating our bowel movements, Yellow Dock helps us to move through our pain. It helps us to take in life’s air by the mouthful and lets us taste the sweetness that lives inside of the bitter.

They are very strong and may be taken diluted in water, juice or tea.

Dilute in water to the ratio of 1-4 ml of tincture to 1/2 cup of water, 3x a day.
